MUMBAI: An autorickshaw driver has been arrested for allegedly trying to rape a Dutch theatre artiste and robbing her of her valuables, police said on Thursday.

The accused Rajpati Nishad (21), a resident of Nalasopara in neighbouring Thane district, was apprehended last night while the prime accused is still at large, they said, adding that the sketch of the absconding culprit has been sent to all the police stations.

The incident occurred when the 20-year-old victim was returning to her house in suburban Mulund in an auto-rickshaw in the early hours of Tuesday, police said.

According to them, the victim, who had come to India on a tourist visa in September, had boarded an auto-rickshaw from Dahisar Checknaka along with a male friend, who alighted at Kandivali in the city.

With the victim alone, the prime accused, who was driving the vehicle, telephoned his friend Nishad, also an auto- rickshaw driver, who boarded the three wheeler mid-way.

On the pretext of taking her to Mulund via the Western Express Highway, the wanted culprit drove his auto towards the forest area at Aarey Colony.

Sensing something wrong, the victim raised an alarm when the two stopped the vehicle, assaulted her and tried to rape her. However, she continued to resist and scream following which they escaped with her purse containing cash, passport, debit card and her mobile phone, police said.

Hearing her screams, locals reached the spot and took her to Vanrai police station where an FIR was registered and a manhunt for the duo was launched, police said.

After preparing sketches of the two accused, police spotted Nishad and nabbed him, they said, adding that efforts are on to trace the other accused.

The accused duo were booked under IPC sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 352 (assault or criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation), 392 (robbery) 376 (rape) and 511 (attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment).
