CHENNAI: A 32-year-old man who was arrested on Friday for kidnapping a 15-year-old girl by promising her financial assistance from the chief minister was slapped with additional charges of rape, impersonation and cheating on Saturday.
Police slapped rape charges on Kannan alias Sridhar of Rajapalayam, who was involved in more than 51 theft cases in Virudh Nagar district, after a medical report proved that the girl, Punitha(name changed), was raped several times. Kannan was remanded in Puzhal prison on Saturday after being produced before a magistrate court in the city.
The five-day hunt for Kannan finally ended in Mattuthavani near Madurai when a police team led by the Choolaimedu police inspector N Giri nabbed him. Punitha, who was abducted on December 18, was rescued from a TNSTC bus that was about to leave for Namakkal.
Joint commissioner of police (east Chennai) S N Seshasai commended the police teams who arrested Kannan and rescued the girl. Sridhar had initially planned to sell the girl off in Mumbai, but fell in love with her and decided to marry her, police said.
