CHENNAI: K Thilagavathi, a 16-year-old school girl found dead in her house near Gummidipoondi on Wednesday, was killed by her uncle to "protect the honour of the family," police said on Saturday.
K Hari, 37, confessed to having committed the crime and was arrested on Saturday, the police said. They said it was a case of "honour killing" since the girl, a plus-1 student of a government school, had figured in a video clip showing her in physical intimacy with a senior boy of the same school. The girl's father, however, said Hari killed her because of enmity with his family.
Thilagavathi was found hanging on Wednesday and police initially believed it to be a case of suicide. For a couple of days, the video clip showing two girls and five boys in a classroom, has been doing the rounds. The school had expelled Thilagavathy, another girl and five boys on Tuesday.
The girl's father called up the police on Wednesday to say that she was found hanging. After postmortem found that the girl's hyoid bone was fractured, police focused on the murder angle. "We questioned her relatives and Hari confessed to having killed her for bringing bad name to the family," Madharpakkam police inspector K Venugopal told TOI.
Police had earlier arrested three teenage boys and are on the lookout for two other students. Thilagavathi was the first child of M Kumar, an agricultural worker at Sethilpakkam village in Tiruvallur district about 80km from the city.
"We knew there was a video, but there was nothing obscene about it. My daughter was not worried about it. Hari killed her because of previous enmity with us," Kumar said.
Hari has been sent to Puzhal prison. The arrested students were produced before the Juvenile Justice Board and sent to a juvenile home.
