May 18, 2012: Man held for dowry harassment

COIMBATORE: The city police on Wednesday arrested two persons for demanding dowry and harassing their wives. The duo has been lodged in Coimbatore central prison.
According to police, S Hemalatha (31) of Tatabad married M Saravanakumar (39) of Gandhi Nagar near Edayarpalayam, seven years ago. The couple has two daughters. Hemalatha was working as an office assistant in an auditor's office in Gandhipuram. Saravanakumar owned a travel agency and had borrowed loans from various persons but could not repay it. So, he sold his vehicle and started working in a private firm.
He suspected his wife's fidelity and tortured her. He consumed liquor and abused her mentally and physically. Unable to bear this, she left with her children to her parent's house in Tatabad. However, Saravanakumar went to her work place and verbally abused her. She finally lodged a complaint with the all women police station (central) in Gandhipuram on Wednesday.
Inspector M Manickam said that her husband Saravanakumar had tortured her for the last two and a half years. She quietly bore the abuse for the sake of her children. In her complaint she mentioned that he demanded Rs 2 lakh, 20 sovereigns of gold jewels and two cars for his travel agency.
The police have registered a case against Saravanakumar under section 498(A) (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 506(i) (Criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code (IPC). They arrested him on Wednesday and he has been lodged in Coimbatore central prison.
In yet another case, all women police station in Ramanathapuram have arrested a 43-year-old man for harassing his wife on Wednesday.
Police said, B Vasanthi, 41 of Erimedu had married P Balu, 43 of Puliyakulam, 21 years ago. The couple had two children. Balu was working in a hotel. He often consumed liquor and beat his wife. He demanded Rs 1.50 lakh as dowry. He had tortured her physically and mentally for the last eight months. She approached the deputy commissioner of police Hema Karunagaran and explained her situation to her. Based on the DCP's instruction police conducted an inquiry and arrested Balu on Wednesday. He has been lodged in Coimbatore central prison.
