GUWAHATI: After holding a two-day camp in the state and hearing 50 human rights violation cases, the National Human Right Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday expressed its concern over the spurt in crimes against women in the state.
Though the NHRC said that compared to other states in the country, Assam fares better as far as incidents of human rights violation are concerned, the body suggested that the state government take strong steps to safeguard the rights of women, bonded labourers, children and disabled people.
Addressing the media here, NHRC chairperson Justice (retd) K G Balakrishnan said that the hike in crimes against women in all sections of society needs to be addressed immediately.
"After discussions with various NGOs, the DGP of Assam Police and hearing the cases, the NHRC has found that the rise in crimes against women in Assam is a major cause for concern. We have asked the state government to act on it. The state authorities have given us their assurance to act on the matter," said the chairperson.Link: Crime against women worries NHRC
