NEW DELHI: Days after a maid was found locked up and starving at a Dwarka apartment, cops and an NGO have rescued a 14-year-old girl working at a businessman's house at Batla House in Jamia Nagar area, southeast Delhi, who alleged she was being raped and tortured by members of the family.

Salma (name changed), in a statement to the Child Welfare Committee, said the businessman's 25-year-old son had repeatedly raped her and even had unnatural sex. The girl, who was brought to Delhi when she was 11, alleged she was routinely beaten up with sticks by the businessman's wife and daughter, and was recently burned with a pair of tongs.

The businessman's son, identified as Nadeem, 25, has been arrested and charged with rape and unnatural sex. His mother, Juhi, and his sister are absconding and the police are raiding their suspected hideouts to arrest them. Cases have also been registered under IPC sections relating to causing hurt and sections of the Juvenile Justice Act.

The businessman is away on work to Saudi Arabia.

In her statement, Salma said her parents had separated when she was a toddler. She later lived with her maternal grandmother who brought her to the capital around 3 years back. The girl was handed over to the businessman's family which currently lives in Batla House, Jamia Nagar.

Salma alleged she was made to work from early morning to late at night and was often slapped and beaten. She claimed whenever Nadeem got an opportunity he sexually assaulted her. The girl told the authorities that he first raped her when the family lived in Zakir Nagar. After that, he raped her whenever no one was at home. The last such assault, she alleged, took place a week back.

"I reported the matter to his mother but she said I was making false allegations. Meanwhile, Nadeem threatened me with dire consequences if I opened my mouth," the girl said in her statement.

The abuse came to light when a person called up NGO Butterflies Childline on Tuesday night and tipped them off about the girl. The person, probably a neighbour, said screams were often heard from the house and it appeared that the girl was being beaten up by her employers. The NGO, along with cops, then raided the house.

The girl was taken to AIIMS for a medical examination where rape was confirmed. There were fresh burn and injury marks on her arms. After registering cases, the girl was produced before the Child Welfare Committee, Lajpat Nagar. After the CWC recorded her statement, she was sent to a child care home, Prayas, in Tughlakabad Extension.

"We are looking for Nadeem's mother and sister, and expect to arrest them soon for their respective offences. Nadeem has been arrested for raping a minor. Further investigation is on," said a senior police officer.
