GURGAON: An unidentified couple left their almost one-and-a-half-month-old baby girl unclaimed in the civil hospital on Thursday morning. Police officers said that the couple left the baby with an old woman. They had told her that they would bring medicine for the baby but never returned.
The baby has now been kept in the civil hospital and doctors said that she is fine.
The incident was reported around 11.30am. Sources said that the couple, apparently hailing from a well-to-do family, reached the civil hospital with the baby girl. They approached an old woman who was waiting for her relatives sitting under a tree on the hospital premises.
The woman revealed to the hospital authorities that the baby's mother told her that she needed to bring some medicine for the child. The father said he was going to bring the car. After waiting for a long time for the couple to return, the old woman approached cops deployed at the police post.
The police took all details from the old woman and later the hospital staff took the baby in their custody. "The baby is cute and doing fine. Everyone attending to her is taking good care of the newborn," said Rajesh Devi, a staff nurse at the civil hospital. "We have lodged an FIR against an unknown couple and are investigating the case. The baby is in the care of hospital administration," said Satyendra Singh, the investigating officer. This incident has once again proved how numerous efforts by the state government to save the girl child have not hit home. Gurgaon, despite being the financial capital of Haryana, has a poor sex ratio record. This is not the first such case when a baby girl has been abandoned by cruel parents. A one-month-old baby girl was found unclaimed near Sukhrali village in March 2010. Another unclaimed girl was found near the same village two months later.
Similarly, a baby girl was recovered from Sector-10 in July. Only a month later, two minor girls were found unclaimed near IMT Chowk.
