About a month ago, a 39-year-old woman was gangraped in a car, brutally assaulted and dumped on Nivedita Setu near Dakshineswar temple. The victim - a resident of Baranagar Parking Bustee near Belghoria Expressway - succumbed to her injuries at hospital. Later, her lover Dilip Sonar was rounded up for the rape and murder of the woman.
On getting information, police commissioner of Asansol-Durgapur commissionerate, Ajay Kumar Nand, ADCP (central), Bhaskar Mukherjee, ACP (central), Sunil Yadav and ACP (DD), Chandra Sekhar Bardhan rushed to the spot. The incident has created a stir in the Asansol- Durgapur belt.
Talking to TOI, Nand comissioner of Asansol- Durgapur said police have seized two bags that were found lying near the dead body. Cosmetics, torch, jewellery and many used and unused condoms were found among the belongings that hint the victim was a sex worker.
The body was later identified, police said. Earlier, she used to stay at Kada Road in Durgapur - the red light area of the industrial town. But of late she was staying at Lachipur in Niamatpur, Kulti's red light area.
Police have already started probe but have not been able to make headway. They are yet to ascertain whether the victim was killed elsewhere and her dead body later dropped in Raniganj.
The incident has come as a shock to the state government.
The administration is baffled at the fact that the crime graph is still on the rise despite the formation of a police commissionerate and deployment of a large number of police personnel. and vehicles the crime graph has not reduced.
The CP himself is not satisfied with the performance of the three ACP rank officers and wants them to be transferred.Link: Sex worker raped, murdered in Asansol
