Apr 21, 2012: Constable, wife and son held for girl's murder

MADURAI: A police constable, his wife and their son were arrested for the murder of a 20-year-old girl in Usilampatti near Madurai, on Thursday.

The constable's son had developed an affair with the girl but when she insisted on marrying her, he refused and murdered her. While the youth allegedly murdered the girl, his parents were held for attempting to hide it from the police and protect their son.

Police said that Babu (23) son of Ponnusamy (45), a native of Usilampatti, a serving police constable in Melur station had developed an affair with Kasthuri (20) daughter of Gnansekaran residing at Kumaram village near Madurai. Kasthuri was working in a sports equipment store in Usilampatti where Babu used to frequent.

Police said that on April 8, when Babu's parents were away from the home he invited Kasthuri to his home. When Kasthuri visited the house, she insisted Babu to marry her as soon as possible. But Babu had allegedly refused to marry her leading to an altercation between the two. During the heated argument, Kasthuri threatened that she would lodge a complaint with the police, if he refused to marry her. In a fit of rage, Babu strangulated her to death, police said. He then dug a pit under a tree in front of his house and buried Kasthuri's body.

"Babu's parents returned home on that day and found that he was dull. When Babu told them about the murder, the two scolded him and assured that everything would be alright. They did not inform the police about the crime and instead attempted to hide it," police said.

In the meantime, when Kasthuri failed to return home, her father Gnansekaran lodged a complaint with the police that his daughter was missing. Police, who were initially clueless about the missing girl, however, found a receipt of a pawn shop that had the name of Babu in it. Police traced Babu and during interrogation he confessed to have committed the crime.

While Babu was nabbed earlier in the day, Ponnusamy and his wife Parameswari were later arrested in the night. The body was also dug out from the pit and was sent to post-mortem.
