KANPUR: A police officer accused of sexually exploiting an Indian Air Force officer's teenaged daughter was arrested from Kanpur on Wednesday.
Sources said DSP Amarjeet Singh Shahi was arrested while he was about to board a bus to Lucknow. He was on his way to surrender before the chief metropolitan magistrate, who had issued a non-bailable warrant against Shahi (56) on April 16 for alleged exploiting and blackmailing the girl after making her obscene MMS.
He was later produced before a local court and remanded in 14-day judicial custody. The police did not press for the custody of Shahi, who has been charged with rape and kidnapping. Jail sources said undertrials and prisoners thrashed the DSP forcing authorities to shift him to a separate barrack.
Earlier, reports said Shahi had disappeared after applying for a long leave and had gone to Punjab to evade arrest. The girl's father had lodged an FIR against the DSP. She told police that Shahi had exploited her physically and made an MMS after drugging her. He then allegedly started blackmailing her and threatened to send her father to jail under the Narcotics Act. He also forced her to sign some blank papers.
Due to Shahi's pressure, the girl had initially charged her father with physical exploitation and the police had even registered a case against him. According to court records, when the girl later retracted her statement, the police amended the FIR and included sections of physical exploitation and blackmailing against Shahi.
Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav had suspended Shahi and also ordered a departmental inquiry against him on Friday last.
An inquiry was also constituted against him after the girl's father complained about Shahi to DGP Ambrish Chandra Sharma. Shahi was posted as circle officer of Kunda Kotwali in Pratapgarh while the girl's father is a flying instructor in Kanpur.
On March 13, the girl had consumed poison in the presence of her parents and Shahi at her residence in Kanpur's Cantt area. An ASP investigated the case and Shahi was found guilty. The girl's father had also claimed that the accused had threatened him with dire consequences and asked to withdraw the case.
The girl, her parents and social activists had staged several protests, including relay fast, in Kanpur for speedy justice.
