AHMEDABAD: An 88-year-old woman was found murdered at her residence in Usmanpura on Sunday. Police have detained a domestic help as primary suspect in the case.
Police have not yet been able to find the motive behind the murder and have started questioning nearby residents and relatives of the deceased.
The victim was identified as Jaya Patel, a resident of Panchsheel Society, Usmanpura, whose body was spotted by a woman at 10.30 am on Sunday when she had come for the routine chores at the bungalow as domestic help. She then informed Patel's daughter and son-in-law in Satellite who rushed to the spot and informed police.
"She was bed-ridden for some days due to ill health. We found her dead on the bed itself. Her body didn't bear any struggle marks. However, the post-mortem showed strangulation as cause of death. It might have been done with bare hands," said M C Patel, inspector of Naranpura police station.
"At the moment, we have not been able to establish whether there was any break-in or not, but we can't rule out the possibility that Patel was targeted as she was living alone," he added.
The inspector said that police have rounded up a male domestic help who used to work at the victim's house and who was found missing at the time of murder. Also being questioned are the victim's relatives and neighbours to know the last time they had met her or had seen any suspicious movement near her residence.
Three days ago, a 70-year-old woman in Saijpur was murdered by the youths who stole goods worth more than Rs 90,000 from her residence.
On Saturday, two domestic helps working at a senior citizen woman's residence in Ambawadi robbed her of gold bangles worth Rs 55,000. City police have urged the senior citizens to dial toll free number 1095 for help in case of such emergency.
