Oct 18, 2012: Man rapes 11-yr-old girl as his mother holds her captive

MUMBAI: An 11-year-old girl from Bhayander was allegedly abducted and repeatedly raped by a man of 20 in Rajasthan for three months since May. The police said his brothers helped him keep the girl captive and they, along with their mother, tried to kill her, grievously injuring her in the process. At present, she is recovering at home.

The main accused, Naresh Prajapati (20), and two of his brothers, Goparam (27) and Bharat (28), were arrested on Saturday by the Navghar police from Vapi in Gujarat. The mother, Jeevidevi (55), and the remaining brother, Kishan (25), were arrested from their village Gajanipura in Rajasthan's Pali district.

Kavita (name changed) went missing from her home in Goddev, Bhayander (East), on May 1. A complaint was registered with the Navghar police. On July 14, Rajasthan police informed Navghar cops that a girl had been found with deep injuries to her face and body. "A medical examination revealed sexual assault," said inspector Dinkar Pingle.

Naresh, who couriers ingredients to sweetshops, resided in Kavita's neighbourhood. Earlier this year, he took her father to Gajanipura for treatment of chronic alcoholism. The father returned a reformed person. On May 1, Naresh eloped with Kavita, a class-V dropout, promising her marriage. After spending a few days in Titwala, they went to Gajanipura.

While Kavita's ordeal started, Jeevidevi told villagers Naresh had married the girl in Mumbai. But the villagers did not believe her, given the girl's age, and started putting pressure on the family to take her away.

On July 12, the family took Kavita to a secluded place and tried to smash her head and face with a stone. They left her for dead, but passersby found her and called the police. "The accused had been evading arrest, but were tracked because of their cellphones," said a police officer.

The accused have been charged under the IPC's sections 376 (rape), 307 (attempt to murder) and 366 (kidnapping).
