NAVI MUMBAI: A 14-year-old schoolgirl was raped and murdered by a man at Pali in Raigad district as she was heading towards her home on Wednesday.
The perpetrator was caught by villagers and handed over to the police soon after the incident.
The villagers and the police managed to catch the rapist only on a thin clue that a suspicious looking man'' was wearing a red coloured T-shirt on the evening, the incident happened.
The Std IX student was allegedly accosted by the accused, Viren G Rajput, who dragged her from the main pathway and raped her. Rajput, who is believed to be in his 30s, later strangled her and buried her body in a swamp, the police said. "After committing the crime, Rajput slipped out without arousing suspicion," said a senior police officer. When the victim did not return from school in the evening, her parents and neighbours started searching for her.
Their enquiries revealed that "a man clad in a red t-shirt" had been following the victim earlier that evening.
Soon, the villagers were on the lookout for the suspect. According to the police, the accused gave himself away when he asked a villager for directions. Rajput confessed to raping and murdering the schoolgirl and lead the police to the spot where he had buried her body.
"Rajput, who hails from Madhya Pradesh, has been remanded in police custody till October 25," said a Pali police official.Link: Man rapes and kills 14-year-old girl, buries body
