AHMEDABAD: Four women laborers were gang-raped by armed robbers in the outskirts of the city on Thursday night. A complaint against yet-unidentified robbers was registered at Viramgam police station.
The incident took place in at Hansalpur village, some 4 km away from Viramgam. "There a number of laborers are working at the Narmada canal. They stay in small shanties covered with plastic sheets. At midnight, some of them heard angry shouts. They rushed out and saw some eight to 10 people standing outside with sticks, swords and torches.
"The robbers first grabbed some of the labourers' children and threatened to kill them if anybody dared to raise an alarm. The robbers then rushed inside the shanties and took all their money. The labourers had kept cash with them in view of the festivities and have complained of having lost Rs 30,000," said Viramgam police.
Then the robbers attacked the women. "The males were overpowered and forced to stand aside. The robbers then grabbed four women aged between 17 and 35 years and dragged them to a distance of 50 metres and gang-raped them," said a Viramgam police official. The robbers then disappeared at 1.30 am. Later, on Friday morning the hapless laborers sought help from villagers of Hansalpur, who intimated police. Superintendent of police of Ahmedabad Gandeep Gambhir and DIG (Ahmedabad range) R B Brahmbhatt soon reached the spot.
"The victims were taken to the Viramgam hospital for medical tests. The accused have been charged with robbery and rape. We also asked for assistance of forensic experts, who have gathered evidence from the spot. I have asked all neighboring police stations to report any similar cases that may have happened in the past. This may help us identify suspects," said Brahmbhatt.
A similar incident had taken place in Sanand in 2011. Two families of labourers from Madhya Pradesh were looted and women gang-raped by robbers late in the night.
