NAGPUR: A 52-year-old security guard committed suicide after he was booked for raping a minor and a mentally-challenged woman on Saturday.

Deceased Vinayak Thakre's victims were his neighbors. One is 15 years old while the other is 18.

The incident shocked residents of Vaibhav Nagar in MIDC and left the three families devastated. Thakre has a married daughter and a son who is undergoing training with the state reserve police force (SRPF). The widowed mothers of the victims do odd jobs to earn their daily bread.

Thakre's immoral acts came to the fore after he approached a woman in the neighbourhood for a sexual favour. He was willing to pay the mother of three whose husband doesn't stay with the family.

The indecent proposal enraged Prabha (name changed) after which she started enquiring about Thakre's character from people in the neighbourhood.

Prabha first approached Mona (name changed), the 15-year-old seventh standard student, who used to visit Thakre's residence frequently.

When questioned, Mona spilled the beans. She told Prabha that Thakre forced her to have sex when his wife had gone to Amravati on September 22 for Mahalaxmi pooja.

She also said that her neighbourhood friend, the mentally-challenged Shoba (name changed), a distant relative of Prabha, too was sexually exploited by Thakre.

Mona said that Thakre had given her Rs 50 to bring a packet of milk. She was also asked to prepare tea. During her stay, Thakre committed the crime.

The following day, Thakre asked Mona to bring mentally challenged Shoba to his residence. Despite being raped the previous day, it is still not clear as to why Mona took Shoba to Thakre's place.

Thakre repeated his modus operandi. When Mona returned after getting milk, Thakre locked the door from inside and took the girls to his bedroom.

It is learnt that Thakre, who was in a towel, raped Shoba in front of Mona. Police said that Mona tried to resist but was too feeble to challenge Thakre who threatened the girls of dire consequences.

It was Prabha who approached Shoba's mother who in turn informed her elder daughter and her son-in-law. Shoba's elder sister and her husband approached MIDC police who registered a case of rape. On knowing the facts, the cops convinced Mona to lodge another complaint of rape against Thakre.

With his misdeeds reaching the police, Thakre left home on his cycle on Friday morning. On Saturday evening, Thakre called his wife from Ambazari and told her that he had consumed poison. Thakre's family members reached the place and so did the cops.

Thakre was rushed to government medical college and hospital where he was declared brought dead. Ambazari police registered a case of accidental death.

Police said Thakre was on the prowl for young girls who hail from economically-poor backgrounds. Being a security guard, Thakre stayed at home in the day and went to work at night.
