Patna: Six days after Suman Barnawal’s alleged rape and murder shook the state, another incident of gangrape of a Mahadalit woman was reported from Saharsa district on Saturday night.
But unlike the Barnawal case, where police took over 10 hours to lodge an FIR, in the latest case, three culprits were nabbed the same night the complaint was lodged and a chargesheet was filed within 24 hours of the crime.
This is the first gangrape case in the state where the accused have been chargesheeted within 24 hours.
The victim (23), a native of Terasi village, had got married recently.
In a media interaction in the state capital on Sunday evening, Bihar’s director-general of police Abhayanand said the case was solved in record time because of the prompt action of the police. “The incident occurred under Saurbajar police station in Patargha Topi block between 10.30pm and 11pm on Saturday night, when the victim was returning from a fair in the neighbouring Tekanwa village with her husband. The woman was attacked and gang raped by three criminals of Tekanwa village. The couple promptly lodged a complaint, after which senior police officers launched an investigation. Based on preliminary medical examination and statement of the victim, arrests were made,” Abhayanand said.
The DGP added: “The three accused — Chandan Kumar Shah, Mohammad Khurshid and Anil Ram — were arrested the same night. Subsequently, a police inspector carried out a detailed investigation in the case, including confirmation of rape and injury report. A chargesheet was filed at 4pm on Sunday, with a request to the judiciary to conduct speedy trial of the case, as the investigation by the police was complete.
Earlier, Bihar police had filed chargesheet within 24 hours in a kidnap case in Rohtas. The cops also acted promptly when a doctor was assaulted in Purnea and filed chargesheet within a day of the incident.Link: Gangrape chargesheet within 24 hrs
