GHAZIABAD: A 23-year-old woman was set ablaze by her sister's brother-in-law for refusing his marriage proposal in the Kavi Nagar area of Ghaziabad on Wednesday morning, the police said. SP (City), Shiv Shankar Yadav said the victim, Zahida Nisha, a sales manager at a retail outlet in Pacific Mall in Sahibabad, was set on fire by Afroz Khan (25).
"Zahida lives with her elder sister Mehrul Nisha and brother-in-law Feroz Khan in L-Block of Sanjay Nagar. After Mehrul's father's death a few years back, Zahida started staying with her sister. Three months ago, Feroz's brother Afroz proposed marriage to Zahida, which she turned down," Yadav added.
Afroz entered Zahida's room around 6.30am on Wednesday and bolted it from inside. After an altercation, he poured petrol on her and set her on fire. "I was in the kitchen and my husband in the toilet. By the time I rushed to the room, he had escaped," Mehrul Nisha said.
Zahida has suffered 60% burns. She was rushed to Sarvodaya Hospital where her condition was critical till late evening. A case of attempt of murder was registered at Kavi Nagar police station against Afroz who is absconding.
