CHANDIGARH: Police faced criticism again for its lenient attitude towards those sexually harassing girls around educational institutes, when some girl students of Dev Samaj College in Sector 45, openly blamed the city cops for not taking action against miscreants, on Monday. Students spoke openly to SSP Naunihal Singh who was heading the interaction session with students in the college. One of the student Sangeet (name changed) said, "Usually, when I and my friends come out of the college auto drivers and rickshawpullers harass us."
Sangeet said, "Autodrivers and rickshawpullers pass objectionable remarks and make obscene gestures. The act continues till date despite the strict drive against those sexually-harassing women."
A college teacher, who shared her experience about a sexual harassment incident with two girls, said, "I and my husband were returning from a mall when I spotted two girls being harassed by motorcyclists. My husband honked to scare the miscreants, but when I wanted to complain I could not find any police gypsy on the road leading to the mall." SSP (UT) Naunihal Singh also shared his personal experiences and advised the girl students to use modern technology to nail down the teasers on road. Sharing his personal experience, He advised the girls to avoid deserted and lonely roads during night.
A native of Haryana narrated her shocking experience during the interaction. She said once when she approached a Haryana cop regarding a man passing objectionable remarks and making obscene gestures, intead of dealing with the situation on the spot she was told to head to a nearby police station, which was around 12km from the spot. Similarly, another student narrated her bad experience with a city cop in Sector 45 when she was asked for evidence to prove sexual harassment.
The interaction lasted around one-hour and police officials also advised the girl students to make calls to police control room without any hesitation in the case they come across sexually harassed.
