HOSHIARPUR/JALANDHAR: A jilted lover first shot dead a girl, who had just returned from New Zealand, and then killed himself with the same pistol at his office in AddaDosarka on Dasuya Road inHoshiarpur on Thursday afternoon.
Police said that during preliminary investigations, it has come to light that the duo had an affair. The man wanted to marry the girl but she had now developed cold feet towards him, the cops revealed.
The deceased Pardeep Singh (34) of Daulatpur Gillan village used to run a money exchange office in Adda Dosarka, some 20km from Hoshirpur town.
The neighbouring shopkeepers told the police that the girl Mandeep Kaur (26) of Pandori Summblan village came to his office around 11.30 in the morning.
Around 1.30pm, people heard gunshots and when they rushed towards the office, they found the duo lying in a pool of blood.
Hariana town SHO Bikramjit Singh said that the girl's brother Sukhwinder Singh said Mandeep left home while telling her family that she was going to Hoshiarpur for some work. They were not aware that she was to meet Pardeep.
Sukhwinder told the police that his sister had undergone a nursing course in Jalandhar and then went to New Zealand around a-year-and-half back to study further.
SHO said that preliminary probe revealed that the duo had an affair even before the girl went to New Zealand for studies and now after she returned, the man wanted to marry her. However, the girl turned him down. This infuriated Pardeep and he killed Mandeep in a fit of rage and then took his own life, claimed the SHO.
Police recovered two countrymade pistol of .315 bore and three live cartridges lying near Pardeep's body.
SHO said that a pouch of celfas tablets was also recovered from his pocket. "It appeared that the man had come fully prepared to kill the girl and himself too," he added.
