HOWRAH: A housewife was allegedly beaten and burnt to death at her in-laws' home in Howrah's Shyampur late on Monday night. The husband, father and brother-in-law of victim Moumita Jana, 20, were arrested after they took her body to the Shyampur health centre, claiming she had tried to commit suicide by burning herself. Doctors declared Moumita 'brought dead' while they and attendants at the health centre suspected the woman had actually been murdered and asked Moumita's husband Debashish Jana, father-in-law Madan and brother-in-law Ashish to wait inside a room at the health centre. The doctors informed Shyampur police station that lies a good distance away. While it took police some time to reach the hospital, news of Moumita's death reached her paternal home in Rameswar village, close to Komolpur where the health centre is located.
People from Rameswar village came rushing to the hospital. Police too reached the hospital by then. The crowd demanded that police hand over the trio to them. When police refused to do so, the crowd turned furious and allegedly began hurling bricks at the health centre, damaging its front portion. The crowd alleged that police resorted to a lathicharge in which three villagers were injured. Police, however, denied there was any lathicharge and said five policemen were injured in the brickbatting. The combat force was deployed to retore order in the area that turned tense. Police have detained seven villagers for the violence.
Moumita's body was sent for postmortem and police took the trio to Shyampur police station. Moumita's father Nishikanta Maity lodged a complaint at the police station. On the basis of the complaint, the trio were taken into custody.
Moumita's aunt Maya later said her niece had an arranged marriage with Debashish in Deuli village, near Rameswar, a year and half ago. She alleged that soon after the marriage, Moumita's in-laws' began torturing her. Maya alleged Moumita soon realised her husband had an extra-marital affair. "When my niece protested against her husband's affair, she was tortured by him and her in-laws. The torture did not end there. Moumita's in-laws' began demanding dowry from her. Moumita's father Nishikanta works in a sweet shop and is too poor to meet their dowry demand. When Moumita failed to get dowry from her parents, her in-laws' mounted further torture on her."
SDPO Uluberia Shyamal Samanta said they have arrested three accused and detained seven in the mob who resorted to violence.
