Feb 4, 2013: Rape victims' kin allege threats, lack of protection

JAIPUR: While talks of bringing in stricter laws to punish perpetrators of crimes against women are going on, in Rajasthan families of rape victims are constantly being threatened to withdraw cases against the accused.

The family members of a girl who was seriously injured when she was pushed into a well after being gang-raped in Dausa last week are reportedly being threatened by the relatives of the accused.

Similarly, a woman whose 15-year-old daughter was found to be pregnant after being raped for two months in Alwar is facing threats from the accused.

The families despite repeated pleas are not being provided adequate security by the police.

In the case of the Dausa girl, the district administration on Saturday put restriction orders on seven men accused of threatening the family. Before the order, the family was facing a tough time dealing with the constant threats on their life.

The girl (16) is recuperating at SMS hospital. She was raped by two youths who barged into her house at Nangal Rajawatan village in Dausa a week ago. Before fleeing the spot, they pushed her into a 25-feet deep well.

"They said the relatives were trying to get false cases of SC/ST atrocities registered against them. We have put restrictions on relatives of the two accused - Udaipal and Anandpal Singh. They had been ordered to stay away from the family of the rape victim. They will be arrested if further complaints are received in this regard," said a senior district administration official.

Experts said such restrictive orders are not enough to deter the accused or their families from threatening the victim to withdraw complaint. In few cases that they are arrested, they get away with minor punishment.

In the other instance, the minor's mother is fighting a lone battle. The woman alleged that the police instead of providing her family security are trying to shield the accused.

Left with no option, she has now shifted her daughter from Alwar to a shelter home in Jaipur after facing repeated death threats.

The girl was allegedly kidnapped by one Satpal Singh on September 3. The police traced the girl after two months and without conducting a medical examination handed her over to her mother. The woman alleged that the police distorted the case to save the accused and showed in its records that she was recovered from a gurudwara after she went missing.

The mother has approached chief minister Ashok Gehlot, director general of police and state women's commission seeking justice and getting an FIR lodged under rape charges against the accused. Her pleas, so far, have fallen on deaf ears.

Her troubles compounded when she the accused reportedly started threatening her against approaching the authorities.

The woman on Friday approached a court seeking permission for her daughter to undergo an abortion.

Circle officer, Alwar south Ashok Kumar Meena said that a reinvestigation has been ordered into the case following allegations by the woman over facing threats.
