MUMBAI: A 26-year-old man, Amitkumar Singh, was arrested by the Goregaon police on January 24 after his cousin accused him of rape.
The victim, around 25, is pregnant.
She told the police that Singh had promised to tie the knot with her and got intimate, but failed to keep his promise.
Singh is a resident of Nala Sopara. He worked in a private firm at Goregaon and had secured a rented accommodation for the girl in the neighbourhood.
The victim is a native of Punjab and had moved to Mumbai a few years ago. Singh is her uncle's son. She was in a relationship with him for nearly two years. During this period, she also underwent abortions twice.
"Singh took the girl to different places across the city, where he got intimate with her after making promises of marriage," said a police official.
"The couple also lived together briefly and would keep shifting their location. When Singh refused to marry her, the victim lodged an FIR against him on Friday."
Singh was booked under section 376 of Indian Penal Code.
Singh was produced before a metropolitan court at Borivali and was remanded to police custody.
