HOWRAH: A 19-year-old newly-wed girl staggered into the police outpost at the Vivekananda Setu toll plaza, on the outskirts of the city, in the wee hours of Thursday, wailing that she had been raped by her husband's friends. Her clothes were torn and she was in such shock that she hadn't not bothered to cover herself up, police said.
The victim was married only a week ago. Her husband apparently called her to Rajchandrapur station in Bally, from where she was picked up by the two rapists. Police are not yet sure if the husband had any role in the crime. He has not been traced yet.
The doctors who are treating her say she is in trauma and mumbling incoherently. A medical test has confirmed sexual abuse. Two persons have been arrested from Rajchandrapur on the basis of the descriptions provided by her.
Her husband lives in Tarakeswar, Hooghly, but works at Rajchandrapur. The victim says he called her up on Thursday morning and told her that two of his friends would meet her at the Rajchandrapur station and escort her to his house.
"It seems she took a train from Tarakeswar to Bally and changed trains to reach Rajchandrapur. She looked around for her husband but did not find him. When she walked out of the station, two men approached her. It is not clear whether they told her that her husband had sent them or she said she was waiting for him. The two took her to a nearby house and abused her sexually," a police officer said.
The duo apparently drugged her with some food and drinks as she waited in the house for her husband. When she fell unconscious, they raped her till the wee hours of Thursday. She partly came to her senses around 2am and realized what had happened. She ran for nearly 2km in a dishevelled state before she saw the police outpost.
"We were shocked when we saw a semi-clad woman approach us. She was screaming at the top of her voice. We immediately took her to hospital," a policeman said.
Within hours, police arrested Raju Sarkar alias Mirinda and Kartik Das alias Chhotka, residents of Rajchandrapur. It is not yet known if they are friends of her husband.
"We have registered a complaint of rape. The two arrested men are being interrogated," said Ajeya Ranade, Howrah commissioner of police.
