Mar 21, 2012: Politician nabbed for sexually harassing daughter

Mumbai: The president of the minority cell of the Thane Congress was yesterday booked for allegedly sexually harassing his 17-year-old daughter. The accused, Anis Qureshi, was produced in court and remanded to police custody.
According to the Vartak Nagar police who are investigating the case, the arrest was made following a complaint registered by Qureshi's daughter who studies in Std XI.
In the complaint made on Monday, she has alleged that her father has been making vulgar advances at her for the past one-and-a-half years. She stated that on several occasions Qureshi tried coming physically close to her when there was no one in the house.
"Qureshi has been showing her obscene photographs on his camera; he even tried coming close to her on several occasions, the victim has stated in her complaint," said an officer from Vartak Nagar police station. 
The girl broke her silence after one-and-a-half years and approached the police to register an offence against her father, cops said, adding that she was accompanied by her friends when she had come to register the case.

Qureshi has been charged under sections 354 (assault or criminal force on woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced in the local court in Thane and was remanded to police custody.

Qureshi's wife Shabina said that the allegations made by her daughter are baseless. Suggesting that the accusation was politically as well as personally motivated, she claimed that her boyfriend, who belongs to a different caste, had influenced her daughter. 

"Almost a month ago, we had caught our daughter indulging in obscene chats with her boyfriend. When we scolded her, she got upset and disappeared from the house for two days. Since we are against her relationship with the boy, she has come up with such allegations in order to threaten us," said Shabina, who spoke to the media outside the Thane court, holding a Quran in her hand to indicate that she was speaking the truth.
