Jun 30, 2012: Wife hacked during divorce hearing

, TNN | Jun 30, 2012, 02.52AM IST
Barasat: Angry with his wife for seeking a divorce, a 25-year-old man allegedly hacked her with a sickle inside the Barasat court premises on Friday morning as dozens of lawyers looked on horrified. The victim is fighting for life in a hospital.

It was the couple's first meeting since they filed for mutual divorce this April. During the emotionally charged discussions, Jayanti, 22, stepped out of the lawyer's chamber for a breath of air. Husband Prasenjit Majhi pulled out a sickle from his red tote bag and attacked her from behind, police said. The first blow landed at the base of her head. As she staggered, Prasenjit yanked out the blade and struck her at least three more times, police said. Their love marriage is barely 15 months old.

Prasenjit would have continued hitting her had not some lawyers wrestled him away from Jayanti, who was rescued by a brave court clerk. When TOI reached the spot minutes later, some lawyers and court staff stood in shock, blood splattered on their clothes.

'Depressed' hubby tried to woo back wife before attack

Prasenjit's mother Sarati sat inside the chamber, still shaking in horror. A little while earlier, Prasenjit was pleading with his wife not to leave him, said his lawyer Chitradip Dhar.

"Since the time the divorce petition was filed, Prasenjit has been depressed and quiet. He would brood and wonder why the marriage didn't work. He sometimes mumbled that if Jayanti cannot be his wife, she wouldn't be anyone else's either. I never thought he actually meant to attack her," said Sarati.

Prasenjit, a Canning resident, and Jayanti, who was then a fresh HS passout, married on March 21, 2011, after a few months of courtship. She wanted to study further but her in-laws apparently did not allow her. This was the first of the differences that eventually soured the marriage. Jayanti began living at her parents' home more often. Prasenjit, who was very much in love with his wife but unable to stand by her, used to visit her and occasionally stayed over with her. He tried to coax her to return but she refused.

Their marriage fell apart in September 2011 when Jayanti left her in-laws' house forever. Shattered, Prasenjit quit his job with a private firm. He grew depressed but continued to nurse a hope that Jayanti would return. Their case was set for hearing in December, and their lawyers asked them to come to the court around noon on Friday to discuss the case.

Even in the lawyers' chamber, Prasenjit desperately tried to woo back Jayanti, but she remained firm. Around 12.40pm, she got tired of Prasenjit's pleas and decided to step out for a break. Prasenjit followed her with a sickle in his hand and struck before anyone could react, say witnesses. Court clerk Som Sarkar risked his life and threw himself in between Prasenjit and Jayanti. He pulled her aside as a group of lawyers and bystanders pinned Prasenjit down.

Jayanti was taken to Barasat district hospital where she is in a critical condition with skull fractures and deep gashes.

"We witnessed the crime but were so shocked that it took a while to reach. I have fought many a criminal case but this was the most shocking as it happened before our eyes and without any provocation. There was no way we could have known what was coming," said Joydeb Ghosh Dastidar, Jayanti's lawyer. Police have detained Prasenjit and his mother. They suspect Prasenjit came prepared for the attack and will charge him with attempted murder.

Jun 28, 2012: Rape accused had lied to victim's family and police

MUMBAI: Pest control worker, Vilas Chavan, who was arrested for the rape of a 4-year-old girl at Dahisar West on Tuesday, had initially lied to her family and to the police that he had rescued the child from the actual perpetrator. Chavan is a distant relative of the girl. However, the police caught his bluff when they examined his clothes.

The victim resides with her family on a pavement of a bridge across Dahisar river. Her parents work as conservancy workers and she has five siblings. Chavan earlier resided in the same neighbourhood before moving to Rawalpada in Dahisar East.

At around 9.30pm on Tuesday, the victim was playing alongside the Dahisar river when Chavan approached her. He offered to buy her a meal if she accompanied him. The girl agreed as she was well acquainted with him. Chavan then took her to the area outside Dahisar railway station, where he fed her at a Chinese stall. Later, he took her close to the tracks through a three-feet hole in the wall, where she was raped. "When the victim started bleeding, he carried her to her residence and told her mother that he had rescued her from an unidentified perpetrator. The girl's mother thanked him and rushed her child to the Bhagwati Hospital," said ACP Vijay Mestry.

Meanwhile, Chavan went to the MHB Colony police station with the girl's relatives to register a case. When the police started quizzing him about the culprit's description, Chavan faltered. "We then found that the front portion of Chavan's shirt and trouser were wet and muddy, while the back portion was clean. This appeared strange to us. On frisking him, we found a blood-soaked handkerchief. His innerwear was also stained with blood and he had been carrying it along. We immediately sent him for a medical examination and booked him on rape charges after he admitted to the offence," an official said.

The court on Wednesday remanded Chavan to police custody.

Jun 26, 2012: Afraid of eve teasers, Bhopal girls put on veils

TNN | Jun 26, 2012, 12.48AM IST
BHOPAL: It's not just summer or dust that forces city girls to veil their faces and suffocate despite searing temperature. For them, it's more due to security and safety concerns.
Bhopal girls primarily cite eve-teasing and security threat, apart from heat and dust, as reasons for doing so.
Anamika, a student says, "Security is a major concern for girls and hence cover my face. I have often seen that boys follow girls till home or coaching centers."
Eve-teasing is another major reason why girls keep their faces covered, say many college going girls.
Akansha, a private engineering college student admitted," I try changing my route as frequently as possible. I have seen boys on bikes harassing girls."
However, there are some who contest such opinions. Bhupendra Kaur Sandhu, head, womenhelpline cell, says, "Covering face sends a wrong message. Girls need to become mentally and physically strong to overcome eve-teasing. They should take the help of police whenever they sense trouble. The state police run a campaign "we care for you" to protect girls from such incidents."
Nutan Girls College principal Shobhna Maroo says, "Girls do not need to cover their faces to protect themselves from eve-teasing. They should rather root out fear from within. Every year we have been running a programme called Mission Prahar in which Commando Deepak trains the girls for such things."
Sukanya, an engineering student, says, "Eve teasing in Bhopal is too rampant and almost every girl faces it. It is up to the individual if they want to ignore it or fight against it. Covering ones face hardly matters."
However there are other reasons too which many of them admit privately. "Some of us want to hide our identity from our peers when we are going around with boyfriends or a male friend to avoid unnecessary questions," says a student on the condition of an anonymity.

, TNN | Jun 25, 2012, 06.24PM IST
MUMBAI: A doctor and two medical representatives have been booked by the Navghar police in Bhayander (east) for illegally selling abortion pills and kits to patients.

Acting on a tip-off the Thane Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials along with the police raided the Saileela Clinic of Dr Digambar Patil (38) located on Goddev Road in Bhayander (east) and seized 40 illegal abortion kits.

Investigations revealed that Himanshu Mishra who runs the Om Pharma Company at Vasai used to procure the abortion kits from a Chennai based company allegedly at the behest of Dr Patil. The doctor would then with the help of two medical representatives-Pankaj Gaud and Satish Kumar Jha--sell it to doctors and medical stores in the Mira-Bhayander and Vasai-Virar region. A case has also been registered against Gaud, a Kandivli resident and Jha, a resident of Nalasopara.

The FDA, along with the Bhayander police had earlier raided the Bhayander (west) based Jyoti Distributors for illegally stocking abortion kits and pills in the form of mifepristone and misoprostol used in medical termination of pregnancies. The distributor had fake bills of kits being supplied to medical shops in the region and neighbouring talukas.

An unregistered abortion kit was found in the Shriji Clinic maternity home of Dr Sachin Gujarati at Narmada Nagar, Bhayander. A total of 280 illegal abortion kits have been seized from the region since the raid began last week.

As per FDA rules, only qualified MD doctors or gynecologists can prescribe abortion kits registered with the health department. Doctors have to maintain a record of the kits and the patients on whom it was administered.

Both the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation ( MBMC) and the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation ( VVMC) have formed a team of doctors to inspect maternity homes and sonography centres to check for illegal sex determination tests.

Syed Zainulabedin Ali Khan, 22nddescendent and dargah dewan of the 12 century shrine of Khwaja Gharib Nawab on Sunday urged followers to take a strong stand against the prevalent social problems-female feticide, low level of education among Muslims and widening gender disparity.
Khan, while addressing a gathering of religious heads of different shrines on the eve of the sixth day (the concluding day of 800th Urs), said, "Islam prohibits selection of one gender over the other. Our religion and Sufi values advocate gender equality and consider killing of a girl child as a heinous crime against humanity."
The gathering was attended by religious heads of Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia in New Delhi, shrine of Shah Niyaz in Bareilly, shrine of Shahbaz Aulia in Bhagalpur, shrine of Maulana Ziauddin in Jaipur, shrine of Phulwari Sharif in Uttar Pradesh, shrine of Shiekh Salim Chisti in Fatehpur Sikri and shrine of Gulbarga Sharif in Karnataka.
Khan said, "The Prophet of Islam initiated several steps to curb female feticide which was prevalent in the Arabian Peninsula."
The gathering also laid stress on improving the level of education among Muslims, especially girls. All religious heads from different shrines agreed that education is the only tool which can bring Muslims into the mainstream. Khan urged the well-off members of the community to open educational institutes-- schools, universities and engineering and medical colleges.
The spiritual leaders also prayed for peace and communal harmony and for global peace and prosperity.

Jun 25, 2012: District to challenge verdict against dad accused of killing girl

TNN | Jun 25, 2012, 03.14AM IST
Jaisalmer: The district administration will challenge the session's court decision to acquit the father who has been accused of murdering his newborn girl in Devda village in Jaisalmer district in March 2011.
The court had acquitted Bane Singh on Wednesday. He was arrested in January after the forensics report of the viscera stated that the girl had died to poisoning.
Disappointed with the verdict, collector Shuchi Tyagi on Sunday said the district will now challenge the verdict at the high court.
Amid reports of government witnesses changing their statements in the court, the collector said action will be taken against them. SP Mamta Vishnoi too said she would again study and check all points to present a strong case at the high court.
According to forensics report, the newborn had died due to poisoning. Singh was arrested under Sections 201 and 302 of the IPC and produced before the court in March.
Singh's counsel argued that the parents were not present when the body of the newborn was dug out and the DNA test too was not conducted. Therefore, it could not be verified that the girl belonged to the couple. After hearing the arguments, the court acquitted him.
Collector Tyagi, however, said the recent verdict is not going to affect the campaign againstfemale feticide in the district.
In this regard, a show-cause notice too has been issued to an ANM ( auxiliary nurse and midwife) at Delasar village for not informing the district administration and the health department of the suspicious death of a newborn baby girl last month.
Five newborn baby girls have reported died in the district over the past one month.
Deputy chief medical and health officer Dr VP Singh said the ANM did not report the death despite guidelines issued by CMHO and the health department. Durga Kanwar, wife of one Mahendra Singh, had given birth to a baby girl in Delasar village in the last month of May. The baby died under 'mysterious' circumstances.
Dr Singh said in the same village in April month, Dhapu Kanwar wife of Prem Singh through normal delivery gave birth to a baby girl (within 7months) and the baby girl died within some time. The ANM did not inform about this. The health department taking serious note of this, as issued show cause notice under 17cc to the ANM.

Jun 24, 2012: Two pregnant women sleep on every bed in this Bikaner Hospital

, TNN | Jun 24, 2012, 06.48PM IST
JAIPUR: Pregnant women are bearing the heat of pathetic healthcare infrastructure at some government hospitals in Rajasthan. Patients alleged that at least two women are forced to sleep on almost every bed after child delivery in Bikaner's PBM Hospital. Several women could be seen sleeping on the floors of the women wards.
Aggrieved family members of these women approached the hospital administration and demanded that facilities be improved here.
"It is absolutely pathetic the way pregnant women are kept in this hospital. Two women sleep side by side on almost every bed here. The unfortunate ones who did not get a bed are forced to sleep on the floors making them vulnerable to infections," said one Ramakant Sharma whose daughter-in-law gave birth to a child here on Friday.
"I have complained about this to authorities several times, but nothing has been done. The state government has launched several schemes for the welfare of the pregnant women and newly-born children, however, money seems to be going down the drain," said Sharma.
He added that he was considering to shift his daughter-in-law to some private hospital. "It is expensive, but I will be forced to do so," said Sharma.
A hospital official said that principal secretary, health had directed the hospital administration to improve sanitation here on Friday.
