BANGALORE: A 48-year-old autorickshaw driver from Mangammanapalya was taken into custody for questioning by Madivala police on suspicion that he had allegedly attempted to rape his four-year-old niece late Friday evening.
Police action followed a complaint by the child's mother. She told police that her daughter was taken out by her uncle Latheef, 48, promising to get her chocolates and eatables from the neighbourhood around 6pm. When the child returned after an hour, she was found limping . On checking there was a wound on her thighs, the mother said.
"When the mother questioned her daughter, the child had told her that her uncle had beaten her up. The mother had come to the police station around 8pm to lodge a complaint. But went back saying that she will decide the issue with her community leaders. But as no decision was taken at the mosque committee, she returned and filed a police complaint. But the complaint did not say that there was an attempt to rape allegation against Latheef," said police.
Assistant commissioner of police (Madivala sub division ) H Subbanna confirmed that a petty case under section 324 (assault) was taken up by Madivala police . "We are subjecting the child to medical examination . If the tests turn positive for any other crime, we will take up a case under the relevant provisions of criminal law," the officer said.
