Nov 27, 2011: Spurned lover repeatedly stabs girl before public in West Bengal

TNN | Nov 27, 2011, 04.40AM IST
KANKINARA (NORTH 24 PARGANAS): In yet another incident of violence against girls, a 17-year-old student was allegedly stabbed by ayouth on Saturday after she turned down his repeated marriage proposals. The girl has been hospitalized with serious injuries while police raids are on to nab the 22-year-old youth.
The incident took place around 6.30 am nearKankinara Bazaar in North 24 Parganas. The girl had gone to fetch water from a roadside tap. She was standing in the queue when Chottu, the youth, allegedly teased her. She shouted at him and told him to behave himself, but Chottu persisted. Several others were standing in the queue, but none of them spoke up.
This bolstered Chottu's courage and he allegedly proposed marriage to the girl. Thinking she had had enough, the girl asked him to leave at once, but at that Chottu allegedly whipped out a knife and stabbed her repeatedly. As the knife struck her in the shoulder, hands and back, the girl started screaming in a desperate bid to get help.
As more people rushed in, Chottu fled the spot. The girl was taken to Bhatpara state general hospital, where she received nine stitches. Her condition is still critical. The girl, a Class XI student, was to take an examination in school on Saturday.
Locals alleged that the youth, who lives two houses away from the girl, had been teasing her for the last two weeks. He had apparently been proposing marriage to her, which she consistently turned down. A complaint was lodged at Jagaddal police station, but Chottu has gone into hiding.
The girl's father, a schoolteacher, has been out of station for some days, said her mother. "We did not know that the youth used to tease my daughter. She told me about it only on Friday and I immediately went to his house and asked his family to ensure that he didn't tease her in future. It seems the boy tried to kill my daughter because of that," said the girl's mother.
The girl said from her hospital bed that the youth would tease her whenever she was on her way to school. "I had warned him several times, but he did not pay any heed. He continued to tease me whenever he saw me on the streets. When I went to fetch water today, he started teasing me. I shouted at him, but before I realized anything, he suddenly attacked me with the knife," she said.
Police said they have received a complaint and are conducting raids to nab the youth. Prima facie, they said, the youth retaliated after the girl rejected his marriage proposals.
Several cases of molestation and attacks on people trying to save the victims have rocked the state in recent times. On February 13, 16-year-old Rajib Das was brutally murdered in Barasat after he tried to stop some goons from molesting his sister. A couple of weeks later, a Madhyamik examinee was teased and molested by a group of rowdies in Chetla. Her brother, who was accompanying her home, was punched and thrashed mercilessly when he tried to push them away.
Again, on June 23, two men trying to protect schoolgirls from eve-teasers were stabbed in Howrah. Only 10 days back, three girls were allegedly molested by two inebriated youths near a country liquor shop at Higlia near Ashokenagar, North 24-Parganas, after which angry locals demolished the liquor shop and set it on fire.

"The woman stepped out of the car somewhere in Bhiwadi and made a police call," added the officer.

Additional Sessions Judge Rakesh Tiwari imposed the stern sentence on Uttar Pradesh native Subhash Chander, noting that even if the acid attack victim had survived, she would have been akin to a corpse with extensive acid burns all over her body.

"Even the judicial conscience is saying it was good that the victim had expired because being a female, even if she had survived with about 62 per cent burn injuries on her body, she would have been reduced to a living corpse only," Additional Sessions Judge Rakesh Tiwari said.

The court said that Subhash belonged to the village of the victim's mother and lived in the her house in Sultanpuri in West Delhi. Although he was addressed as 'mama' (maternal uncle), he did a cowardly act of throwing acid on her and her minor sisters when they were sleeping, it said.

"The pre-mediation in procuring sulphuric acid in a jug and throwing the same at the dead of the night when the deceased and other victims, all being females and not even being in a position to defend themselves or escape to save themselves, was the most cowardly act done by the convict (Subhash)," the judge said.

Besides convicting Subhash for killing the girl, the court also held him guilty of injuring her siblings and trespassing into their room and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him.

Then what prompted him to kill his daughters -- Renu(10), Riya(8), Gunjan(6) and Mahima(4), Tiwari said since he was to go behind bars after the murder of his wife, his daughters might face problem of surviving safely in the society.

Nov 12, 2011: One-handed rapist-killer gets death

Shyam P V, Maheer Haneef & T Ramavarman , TNN | Nov 12, 2011, 05.18AM IST
THRISSUR: A one-handed beggar who pushed a woman passenger returning home from work out of a passenger train at night when she resisted molestation, and subsequently raped and killed her while she lay injured near the tracks, was sentenced to death by a fast track court on Friday.

The beggar Govinda Chamy (30) was found guilty of rape and murder by special court judge K N Raveendra Babu who, calling it "the rarest of the rare cases", observed that "women in society will be under threat if the accused is not given the death sentence". The judge also fined him Rs 1 lakh.

On February 1 this year, 23-year-old Soumya was travelling in an empty ladies' compartment to Shornur after a day's work as a sales girl at a mall in Kochi. When Soumya resisted Govindachamy, he pushed her out of the moving train near Vallathol Nagar station. He then jumped out and raped her. Soumya was found unconscious and moved to a hospital but she died on February 6.

From a total of 154 witnesses, statements of 82 were recorded before the court. Besides that, 105 documents and 43 pieces of evidence were produced before the court. The prosecution had produced documented evidence that Govindachamy was a habitual offender and was convicted in eight cases in TN from 2004 to 2008. The prosecution also contended that absence of eyewitnesses should not be a reason for withholding maximum punishment "as the man had no qualms of conscience in committing rape and murder together".

Soumya's mother Sumathy, who broke down in the court, said she was happy the murderer was sentenced to death. Hundreds of people, including social activists and politicians, had waited anxiously outside the court since morning to hear the sentence.

Govinda Chamy's lawyer B A Aloor said he will appeal against this verdict in the high court. The case attained a sinister dimension after Aloor revealed during the trial that he was contracted for a large sum of money by a network of criminals from Tamil Nadu, with links to the Mumbai underground, to defend Govinda Chamy.
