MUMBAI: A man stabbed his wife to death after an argument over Rs 100 on Tuesday. Pydhonie resident Arundathi Mardagamini was taken to St George Hospital, but doctors were unable to save her.

Arundathi's husband, Illyaraja, was arrested on Wednesday evening from Dongri. "Illyaraja fled after attacking his wife. Arundathi's friends took her to the hospital and filed a case. The body has been sent for post-mortem," said R G More, inspector of Pydhonie police station. The prime witness in the case is the couple's son, Kishore Kumar (12), who saw his parents quarrelling followed by his mother getting stabbed. According to the police, Arundathi's mother, Bhanumati, was leaving for Chennai on Tuesday and she gave Rs 100 to Kishore as a present.

However, once she left Illyaraja snatched the money from his son, however, Arundathi told him to return it, the police added. When Illyaraja refused Arundathi reprimanded him.

"Later, Arundathi was cutting some fish in preparation for dinner. An irate Illyaraja stabbed her in the chest with the knife she was using. He pursued her and stabbed her in the back repeatedly. Arundathi passed away around 6 pm on Tuesday," said a police officer. "When Bhanumati was informed of her daughter's death, she was in Solapur. She caught a return train to Mumbai and reached on Wednesday. The couple's three children, Kishore, Monu (3) and Rani (2) will be in her custody," the officer added."Illyaraja was a womanizer. He would lose his temper every time Arundathi questioned him about his relationships," Bhanumati said. "My father never gave us any money would always beat us up at the slightest provocation," said Kishore.
