KOZHIKODE: In what appears to be a case of moral policing, a 26-year-old youth who allegedly had a relationship with a married woman, died of serious injuries he sustained after being severely beaten up by a mob from the woman's neighborhood. Shahid Bava, from Cheruvadi, was grievously assaulted near Kodiyathur village office around 11.30 am on Wednesday, and succumbed to injuries at a private hospital here on Sunday.
According to police, Bava used to regularly visit a house occupied by women members of a family in the area during the night. He was apparently warned by the men folk in the locality to stay away but when he came on Wednesday they waylaid him, tied him to an electric post and beat him till he lost consciousness.
Relatives of the victim denied that Bava had a relationship with a woman in that area. Bava, who sustained severe head injuries, was admitted to a private hospital in Kozhikode city. He died on around 3pm Sunday and a post-mortem will be performed on Monday.
The police filed a charge sheet against 12 people and arrested one. Kollalathil Abdurahiman aka Cheriyappu, who was nabbed by the police on Thursday, was later remanded in judicial custody. The others are absconding. A police team led by circle inspector of Koduvalli, Rajappan Ravoothar, is investigating the incident.
