KANPUR: A 27-year-old unemployed man killed his wife and 18-month-old son at Nai Basti in Macharia locality on Wednesday night. He was caught while he was trying to flee from the spot. He tried to hang himself but had failed in his attempt.
Investigators suspect that poverty, coupled with family problems, led to the killings.
According to police, the murders came to light on Thursday morning after accused Anil Kashyap's family members came across the dead bodies of the victims lying in their room in the house. Anil Kashyap, a plumber, lived with his wife Rinki (25) and 15-month old son Hans. He had entered into an altercation with his wife after the dinner on Wednesday night. On early Thursday morning, his father inquired about his health while he was sitting dull in front of his room. He called him to say that he had killed his family members.
When other house inmates went to check, Rinki and her son Hans were found dead with strangulation marks on their neck.
The bodies were shifted to the mortuary for post-mortem examination. The family members claimed that his wife often quarrelled with him over petty issues.
According to Naubasta police, Anil was jobless since the past six months and was depending on his father and other members in the family besides relatives for money. This probably led to frequent quarrels between the couple. The relatives claimed that they were involved in a scuffle on Wednesday night. He married Rinki about four years ago. He had also tried to commit suicide but the rope which he had used broke and he fell on the ground.
Forensic experts and sniffer dogs went to the scene of the crime. DIG Rajesh Rai said the exact cause of death would be known after the post-mortem examination.
"We are investigating the circumstances that led to the murders. The accused might have attacked his family between 12am and 4am," SHO, Naubasta, said.
