Jodhpur: A woman was arrested for burning her 65-year-old widowed mother to death for taking control of her property in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur city, police said Saturday.
Kalpana Devi, who separated from her husband seven years ago, bolted her mother Sandhya Rani inside their house in Shastri Nagar and set it on fire before escaping Nov 1.
“Kalpana was arrested from Udaipur and was brought to Jodhpur Saturday morning,” said a police officer.
Soon after the house was set on fire, their neighbours found Sandhya Rani with burns and rushed her to hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries Friday, police said.
Police initially investigated the case thinking it to be a fire sparked by an electrical short-circuit, but were shocked to find later that the victim’s daughter murdered her for her property in the city, some 290 km from state capital Jaipur.
“Kalpana was living with her mother in Shastri Nagar. Her mother, a widow, owned another house at a prime location here,” the officer said.
He added that Kalpana wanted to sell the house which was being opposed by her mother. “Irked over this, Kalpana plotted the murder,” said the officer.
