MADURAI: A man stabbed his wife to death inside a police station, in front of the women police personnel and then fled from the spot.

The incident took place on Sunday at a police station in Samayanallur, about 20km from Madurai. The police said the couple used to quarrel frequently and was summoned to the police station for counselling. The murder appears to be pre-planned as the man had brought the weapon along with him.

Three women police personnel were in the police stationwhen the murder took place. As the officers were busy attending the stabbed woman, the man fled from the police station. One of the police personnel fainted after witnessing the crime.

The police said the man, Kannan, 43, a lorry driver, had married 29-year-old Muthulakshmi, eight years ago. The couple had three children. They used to fight frequently as Kannan suspected Muthulakshmi of infidelity. A month back, after a quarrel and alleged assault by Kannan, Muthulakshmi left the house and went to Coimbatore where she was working in a textile unit.

After her father lodged a police complaint about his missing daughter, she was brought back to Madurai. Since then, she was staying with her father along with her three kids. Kannan went to the cops with a demand that the kids be handed over to him. It was to sort out this dispute that they were summoned to the police station.

The two had brought their advocates and were seated with the cops when "halfway through, Kannan picked up a fight with Muthulakshmi in front of the cops and when she retorted, he pulled out a knife and stabbed her in the neck multiple times," a cop said. When the cops rushed to rescue Muthulakshmi, Kannan fled from the spot. The police took the woman to the government hospital, where she was declared brought dead.
