MUMBAI: A magistrate's court has held film producer Gaurang Doshi guilty of cruelty to his wife and sentenced him to three years' rigorous imprisonment . Doshi, the producer of the 2002 hit Aankhen, starring Amitabh Bachchan, is absconding .
The sentence is the maximum punishment prescribed by law for the offence of wifebeating under section 498A of the Indian Penal Code.
The police are on Doshi's trail and expect to arrest him soon. The producer, who is 39, is believed to have returned to the city from a London trip on July 1, said his wife's lawyers.
The court convicted Doshi on three counts and said: "The accused is absconding. Issue standing non-bailable warrant and conviction warrant against him."
Doshi could have surrendered before the magistrate and then sought bail. But he was not on the scene even six hours after the court's order.
