NOIDA: A young software engineer allegedly strangled his fashion designer wife in a fit of rage following an argument and stuffed her body in a bed box at their home in Noida before trying to escape, police said on Sunday.

Shavendra Mishra, 24, was arrested after the body of his 22-year-old wife, Pragya, was found in the wee hours, packed inside the bed box at their rented accommodation on the third floor of a house in K-Block, Sector 11, Noida. The couple had moved into the house on July 7.

A senior police official said the murder came to light when a relative of Pragya called the cops after Shavendra had confessed to the crime to Pragya's father, Shiv Prasad Dubey, late Saturday night. Shavendra allegedly told his father-in-law that he had killed Pragya after a heated argument had broken out between the couple. On Sunday, the police arrested Shavendra, who hails from Bhawanipur in Uttar Pradesh, while he was trying to flee.

During interrogation, the software engineer who has B Tech degree, owned up to crime. According to sector 24 SHO Girish Jayant, Shavendra hit Pragya's head with a huge lock which knocked her out. He then strangulated her with a cord of the cooler and put her body into the box of a bed.

After the Noida police received the information around midnight, a police team broke open the lock of the Mishra home and found Pragya's body in the bed box, with blood splattered all over her clothes. A crime team also picked up samples for forensic evidence. "The body has been sent for post-mortem examination and the report is awaited. After the autopsy, the body will be handed over to the family," said Jayant.

As per information, the couple was married on June 22, 2005 but started living together after a traditional ritual called 'gauna' was performed in 2009. Family sources said the couple had a strained relationship and often used to fight.

"When we visited the house, the arrangement of the home suggested that the couple was living in separate rooms. Shavendra's bedroom was located near the entrance as his books and clothes were found strewn about there while Pragya's belongings were found in another room," said a member of the police team which visited the spot.

Pragya was a fashion designer and had recently joined an export house in sector 5 in Noida while Shavendra freelanced as a computer teacher in Mayur Vihar, Delhi. Police said Pragya had not disclosed her marital status at the export house, which she had joined on June 1.
