Mumbai:  A 31-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday evening for allegedly attacking his girlfriend with a knife and then injuring himself during a date at a guest house in Dahisar east.

According to the Dahisar police, Vaman Sawant, an electrician from Virar, and his girlfriend, Sapna Pillai (26), were in room no 4 of Sanmaan guest house when a fight ensued between the couple.

Borivali, was having an affair with Sawant for the past few months.

Sawant, who is already married, used to go to the bar where he met Pillai and fell in love with her. "Sawant used to drop Pillai at her Mira Road residence daily after work.

The two also met at guest houses in the locality," said Sunil Deshmukh, assistant commissioner of police (Dahisar division).

But things got worse when Sawant, who wanted to marry Pillai and had offered her Rs. 3 lakh to help her buy a house, learnt that his girlfriend was two-timing him. He decided to sit and talk about the issue.

"Yesterday, the couple met around 1 pm at the guest house to discuss the matter, but soon a fight ensued when Pillai refused to quit her job," added Deshmukh.

The police officers investigating the case said that at 2.45 pm a waiter heard noises of a scuffle coming from their room. He went inside to only see Pillai lying on the bed and his girl friend hiding in the bathroom.

The waiter immediately alerted the guest house authorities and rushed the couple to Bhagwati hospital.

"The woman had suffered injuries on her stomach, elbows and hands as she had tried to resist the attack, while Sawant suffered injuries on his stomach. The couple was later shifted to Nair Hospital," added Deshmukh.

The police have arrested Sawant for voluntarily causing grievous injuries by dangerous weapons (Section 326) and attempt to commit suicide (section 309) of the IPC.

"Since Sawant is an electrician it is possible that he used to carry a knife and a screwdriver with him," said Deshmukh.

"We will present Sawant before the court as soon as he is discharged from the hospital," added Deshmukh.
