NEW DELHI: Pushed into a corner by his girlfriend, who threatened to inform his family about their relationship if he refused to marry her, a 21-year-old youth kidnapped and murdered her. For nearly a month, the girl's family could not trace her. On Friday, the killer was arrested.

The accused, Mohammad Gulfam, is a resident of Kacchi Khajuri in northeast Delhi and the son of a businessman who owns a nickel-polishing unit at Usmanpur.

The arrest was made on a complaint filed by the girl's mother, Alma, who said her 17-year-old daughter had been missing since June 25.

Acting on information that the girl was last seen with Gulfam, the police interrogated him, but he tried to mislead the police by giving contradicting versions. "On sustained examination, Gulfam broke down and confessed to his involvement in the kidnapping and murder," DCP (North East)Sanjay Kumar Jain said.

Gulfam confessed he had been in a relationship with the victim for the past eight months. The duo had even made a trip to Ajmer Sharif last month to offer prayers, but in the end he decided against marrying her on the pretext that she was poor. The girl's father is a menial worker who supports a family of eleven.

Gulfam expressed his inability to marry her, but the shocked girl insisted he marry her at the earliest. When the victim learned that Gulfam was about to get engaged to someone else, she threatened to go to his house on the day of his marriage and expose his duplicity. To avoid such a situation, Gulfam decided to murder her.

"He allegedly bought a butcher's knife and then coaxed the victim to accompany him to Hapur where, he said, one of his maternal aunts would arrange their marriage. When they reached Simbawali in rural Ghaziabad, "he took her into a sugarcane field and slit her neck with the cleaver, which he had been carrying all along. Gulfam returned to Delhi the same night," Jain said.

A case of murder was registered by the Ghaziabad police while a case of kidnapping was subsequently lodged in Delhi. Information provided by Gulfam helped the police to recover the knife, the motorcycle used to transport the victim to the scene of the crime and the victim's blood-stained clothes.
