JAIPUR: A young man from Gujarat, who had married a local girl in February this year, allegedly strangulated her and later attempted suicide by consuming poison. Police are trying to find out what prompted the man to end his 'love story' on a tragic note.

A case of murder and attempt to suicide has been registered against the accused. The accused Kamlesh (25) married one Puja (21), a Jaipurite, in February, 2011. He came here on and off to meet his wife. "There is something doubtful in this case. We have seized the accused's cellphone to find out if there was any provocation or whether his family opposed the marriage," said commissioner of police, B L Soni, on Saturday.

According to Soni, the accused had killed his wife Puja a couple of days ago in a hotel room at Sindhi Camp where they were staying since July 8. "We are yet to record the statements of the accused. We cannot rule out that there may be some provocation behind what happened," said Soni.

The incident came to light when the man ordered coffee on Saturday morning. The hotel employee who went to serve it found a foul smell in the room and immediately informed the police.

"Prima facie, Kamlesh strangulated Puja a few days ago and poisoned himself probably during wee hours," said Rajendra Singh, circle inspector, Sindhi Camp. He is currently at SMS Hospital
