CHENNAI: The city police arrested a 40-year-old woman on charges of electrocuting her husband at their Vadapalani house with the help of three others in the wee hours of Thursday. Uma Maheswari, the accused, walked into the Vadapalani police station after the murder, while three others whose help she sought, are on the run.
Police identified the victim as N Prasanna (45), a resident of VOC Street in Vadapalani. Uma Maheswari (40) surrendered at the police station on Thursday morning and confessed that she helped kill her husband who had been harassing her. The cops rushed to her house and found Prasanna dead on the verandah. Based on Maheswari's confession, Vadapalani police have registered a case.
Police said Prasanna, who was running a gym, owned five shops on Anna Salai. Maheswari told the police that her husband would regularly bring women home, against her wishes. Prasanna sold off all the valuables including Maheswari's 48 sovereigns of gold and jewels which she had kept for her 14-year-old daughter Aiswarya. Maheswari said her husband was now planning to sell their house for 2 crore. This had sparked a quarrel between them.
"As Prasanna forced her to sell the house, she decided to eliminate him. She sought the help of her family friend M Sampath (44), a resident of Sadananthapuram near Perunkalathur. As per the plan, Sampath invited his relatives Govindaraj and Nandakumar alias Appu to Prasanna's house at 3am on Thursday. Maheswari let them into the house and walked out. Maheswari's daughter Aiswarya and son Akash (13) were sleeping in another room. Maheswari had told Sampath to murder him by giving electric shock so that people would think that he died of electrocution," Vadapalani assistant commissioner of police R Srinivasan told TOI.
Police said, Sampath, Nandakumar and Govindaraj went to the bedroom where Prasanna was sleeping. One of the accused is an electrician and Sampath runs an electrical shop in Perunkalathur. They connected a cable to the power switch board and threw the cable on the sleeping man. Prasanna woke up and cried aloud. Sampath and his aides switched off the power and strangled Prasanna with their hands. During the struggle, Prasanna hit his head against the cot and started bleeding from his ear. After confirming his death, the trio dragged his body to the verandah and stuck a live wire into his hand to make it look like an accident.
"The trio left the place and Maheswari returned to the house. She saw her husband lying on the verandah holding a cable in his hand and blood oozing out of Prasanna's ears. She knew she was in trouble and surrendered before the police," an official said. "Special teams have been formed to nab Sampath, Govindaraj and Nandakumar. We will get them soon," said south Chennai joint commissioner of police K P Shanmuga Rajeswaran.
