MUMBAI: The Pant Nagar police on Sunday arrested a 43-year-old man for allegedly compelling a 19-year-old college girl to marry him without her consent and circulating an MMS clip in the locality of him raping her when she refused to maintain a physical relationship with him. The accused had married two women before blackmailing and threatening the victim to marry him in September 2010.
Last week, the matter came to light when the victim Sunita Patil's (name changed) mother learnt that Ghatkopar resident Prahlad Lokhande, who claimed to be the president of the north-east district Congress committee (ward 128) in Kamraj Nagar, Ghatkopar (E), raped her daughter and forced her to marry him in court last year without their consent.
Sunita's mother gave a written complaint to Mumbai police commissioner Arup Patnaik on Thursday asking him to take action against Lokhande. A police team led by Quaiser Khalid and deputy commissioner of police (zone VII) Sanjay Shintre supervised the operation and arrested Lokhande under Patnaik's orders. TheThe police learnt that the victim's father worked as a daily wage labourer with Lokhande. "Lokhande learnt that Sunita's father was an alcoholic and got close to him and helped him financially. This helped him to get access into the victim's house a year and a half ago," the police said.
In the FIR the victim said, "In September 2010, Lokhande posed as my brother and managed to get hold of my school leaving certificate. He asked me to accompany him to the Bandra court to stand as guarantor in a criminal case.
It was too late when the victim learnt that Lokhande had used the leaving certificate as age proof to marry her. "One day Lokhande told my parents that he will get me a job in a company at Thane and took me for an interview. After attending the interview he told me to wait till the result was out. He took me to a lodge where he raped me and made an MMS clip," the victim said.
Later on several occasions Lokhande tried to get in touch with the victim and threatened to make the rape MMS clip public if she did not fulfil his demand.
