BOKARO: A five-year-old girl was raped while returning home from school last week even as her parents did not report the matter to police fearing social stigma. The incident came to light on Tuesday when the child was taken to the Bokaro General Hospital (BGH) for treatment.
Sonia (name changed), a nursery student of a public school here, was raped on July 11 by an unidentified middle-aged person near the Jawaharlal Nehru Botanical Park in Sector IV here. "Family members did not report it to police fearing social stigma. But when the girl's health did not improve, she was brought to the BGH for treatment on Tuesday and the doctors informed police," an officer of Sector-IV police station said.
Officer in charge of Sector-IV police station Akhil Ahmed said an FIR under Section 376 of IPC had been lodged. He said the accused picked up the girl in front of the BGH, "The girl, who is in deep shock, said the person took her behind the bushes outside the park and tortured her. She said she had not seen the person before," said Ahmed.
