PANAJI: A day after 42-year-old Poornima Pednekar was murdered at the Panaji KTC bus stand, it has now come to light that the accused, Rohan Gurung, 26, killed her because he was upset with the victim for resisting his moves to have sex with her, the police said.
Gurung, a resident of Sikkim, was arrested for murdering Poornima during the wee hours of Monday. The Panaji police have registered the case under Section 302 of the IPC (murder). "Pednekar objected to being sexually abused by the accused and when he forced himself on the victim, she shouted out for help. Angry with this, he pushed her head to the ground and suffocated her to death," said a police officer.
The accused was arrested by the police after a watchman working at the bus stand called the Panaji police station Monday morning and informed them that a lady was lying motionless behind the bus stand's public toilet. The watchman informed the police that she was with a man and they were kissing each other.
The watchman also told the police that he had later seen the accused with the woman, when she was screaming for help. "Then as the woman fell unconscious, the accused escaped," the police added.
