RAIPUR: Within days after sensational case of sexual assault on minor girls at a tribal hostel came to light in Kanker district, another case of similar nature has surfaced in Chhattisgarh. Police arrested a woman superintendent of a girls' ashram for allegedly forcing a minor girl into sex acts with her friend. Police is now trying to find out whether any other girls had fell victim to similar acts.
The matter came to light after a girl brought the matter to the notice her parents, who in turn reported the matter to the Dondi police station. They also complained to the Gondwana samaj, a local body of tribes' community.
Dondi police station in-charge K K Kushwaha said a case has been registered against girl's hostel superintendent Anita Thakur and another person, identified as Chotu, on the complaint of the girl concerned and both of them have been arrested. Charges of rape, house trespass in order to commit offence punishable with life imprisonment, criminal intimidation, wrongful confinement and other provisions of IPC were slapped on them.
Both the hostel superintendent and another person were later presented before a court at Durg, which remanded them to judicial custody.
The girl concerned as their family members were running from pillar to post to get a complaint registered in connection with the sexual assault on her that took place in 2008 when she was studying in class eight. The complaint said she was pushed into a room inside the girls' hostel where the accused Chotu was present but she kept quiet for long because of fear.
However, she told her parents about the incident few months ago, who apprised the community leaders. Subsequently, they complained to the police but the probe did not progress further because of the Thakur's high connections.
Amid raging controversy over the Kanker sexual exploitation case, the Godnwana community leaders approached the police again, alleging that unknown people were frequenting the girls' hostel under the patronage of the hostel superintendent and demanding action on the basis of the girls' complaint.
Sensing trouble, the police promptly arrested Anita Thakur and produced her in the court and are now talking about interviewing all girls staying in the hostel to record their statements.
On January 10, this hostel superintendent was felicitated by chief minister Raman Singh as "best superintendent" during his visit to Balod to attend the first foundation day function of the district. Gondwana community leaders alleged that she enjoyed considerable clout in the administration and among other influential people.
Expressing serious concern over the second incident sexual exploitation in government run girls' hostel, opposition Congress spokesman Shailesh Nitin Trivedi said his party leaders had already demanding instituting a judicial inquiry to probe the state of affairs of all girls' hostels and ashrams.
