BOKARO: A 25-year-old married woman attempted suicide by consuming phenyl three days after she was raped allegedly by her friend's brother, who lives in her neighborhood, at Sector-IV here. The victim is under treatment in the intensive care unit of a nursing home.
Ashamed of facing her husband and family members after the incident that took place on Friday, the victim drank the pesticide to end her life on Monday. Her condition is said to be critical. However, police are looking for the accused Manoj Singh who is absconding.
Officer in charge of Sector IV police station Surender Kumar said the victim's family members first tried to hide the rape incident but the matter came to fore after the woman attempted suicide. The victim could not bear the embarrassment and drank phenyle on January 14.

On Friday evening, she had gone to the City Centre market to recharge her cellphone. While returning home, Singh met her on the way. She knew Singh as her friend's brother who lived in the same locality. "Singh insisted on accompanying her home as it was getting dark which she initially she. Sometimes later as she was passing a field near her house, Singh came from the backside and dragged her in a dark corner of the field. She tried to raise the alarm but Singh gagged her with a handkerchief and tied both her hands with dupatta before outraging her modesty. Before leaving, Singh threatened her with dire consequences if she told anyone of the incident," the police officer quoted the woman as saying.
Giving her statement to the police officer, the victim said, "When Singh left the spot and ran towards the road, she spotted her husband who was looking for her. She shouted to him to catch Singh but the accused managed to flee." Later, her family members and husband stopped her from lodging a police complaint fearing social stigma," the OC said.
The incident made the victim depressed and she consumed phenyl to end her life. An FIR has been lodged under section 376 of IPC against Singh with Sector IV police station. Raids are on to nab the accused.
