Calangute PI Nolasco Raposo said a lady constable attached to the Goa armed police was on duty at around 11.30am near the lifeguard tower at Calangute beach. While she was talking on the phone to a colleague, jail guard Suresh Gaonkar, 30, approached her and slapped her repeatedly on the face, and also threatened to further assault her if she lodged a complaint about the incident.
A source said the jail guard had once proposed marriage to the lady constable who had rejected the proposal as she suspected him to be involved with another woman.
After the incident, the lady constable lodged a complaint with the police, following which an offence was registered. The constable was taken to Candolim primary health centre for treatment. Gaonkar was arrested later in the evening and taken into police custody.
Police have also written to the Aguada jail superintendent informing him about the incident and asking him to take necessary action against the jail guard.
