GHAZIABAD: With the arrest of a 26-year-old man, police claim to have cracked the attempt to rape and murder case of a six-year-old girl whose body was found on January 9. The incident had sparked off a violent agitation in the Sihani Gate area of Ghaziabad resulting in police resorting to lathicharge to disperse the mob.

Police said the accused, Ravi Singh, was known to the victim's family and lived nearby. Both Ravi and the victim's father Sunder were painters and had worked on several jobs together. "The accused knew the victim as he would regularly go to her house and give her sweets. Ravi lost his wife to tuberculosis 18 months ago and has a 2-year-old daughter," said a senior police officer.

Singh is a drug addict and had once been admitted to a local rehabilitation centre, cops said. "On interrogation, the accused said the girl had asked him for sweets. Initially he refused, but when she persisted he took her to an abandoned field behind a banquet hall and attempted to rape her. When the girl started screaming, the accused panicked and hit her across the head with a brick lying at the spot. He then fled the spot," said SP (city) SS Yadav.
