Palanpur: A newborn baby girl was found beheaded in Zerda village, some 12 km from Deesa in Banaskantha district on Monday.
The baby's body was dumped near a canal on the village outskirts, said police inspector of Deesa PS Goswami.
"It is difficult to say if the baby's head was chopped or eaten away by animals," Goswami said.
However, Surendra Gupta, a doctor working for " Save the Girl Child" campaign in north Gujarat, said had it been an attack by animals, other parts would also have been severed. "It was a deliberate act," he said.
District superintendent of police Ashok Kumar said, "We will thoroughly investigate the case and try to reach the culprits behind such a heinous crime."
