VADODARA: A young boy and a girl can't dance together on stage as a couple! A girl student cannot perform western dance wearing shorts, frock or skirt! These are the new set of rules introduced by MS University's largest faculty — Faculty of Commerce — for its annual youth festival 'Innovision 2013' that started on January 28.
On Tuesday, a girl student was asked to return from stage after she came wearing a short skirt for a solo dance. It was only after she wore jeans that she could participate.
The rules distributed along with forms states: proper clothing and dressing should be maintained during performances. In practice, this means that girl students shouldn't wear skimpy and short clothes.
Teachers coordinating the festival said the rules are made to avoid hooting, teasing and vulgarity from audience.
"It is not moral policing but we don't want any untoward incident," says dean Dr Jyoti Achanta. "During live shows, when the stage is very near, we have to ensure that there is decency," she says.
The faculty decided to stop couple dance after a boy and a girl became too cozy on stage and posed for a kissing scene last year, said Achanta.
MSU vice-chancellor professor Yogesh Singh, however, does not agree with such rules. "Such dresses are worn elsewhere too. I don't see any reason to introduce such rules," Singh told TOI.
