PUNE: Maharastra police have sent teams to New Delhi and Bangalore to arrest a 30-year-old software engineer, who allegedly set her former boyfriend and his fiancee ablaze at their apartment in Pune on Thursday morning.

Anushree Kundra, a Bangalore-based techie, has been booked for attempt to murder. Police said Nimesh Sinha Rameshnandan Prasad, 27, sustained 10% burn injuries while his 26-year-old fiancee, Juhi Abhayunandan Prasad, suffered 98% burns.

Senior police inspector Bajirao Mohite said Nimesh, also an IT professional, had recently got engaged to Juhi, a Delhi-based lawyer. "Nimesh told us that he knew Anushree for over six years," Mohite said. "He said that he was living with Anushree in Gurgaon before shifting to Pune three years back. Juhi, too, has given a statement, saying she knew that Nimesh and Anushree were living together in Gurgaon."

Juhi told the police that Anushree wanted to marry Nimesh but his parents were opposed to their relationship. Instead, they fixed his marriage with Juhi, and that angered Anushree. "Juhi told us that Nimesh's mother called her on October 12 asking her to rush to Pune as she had learnt from Nimesh that Anushree was with him," Mohite said.

Juhi said she took a flight to Pune on Wednesday evening and went to Nimesh's flat in Pune. "Anushree was already there at his flat. Juhi spoke to Anushree and they had a heated argument over their marriage."

Mohite said Nimesh and Juhi have given statements saying that they tried to pacify Anushree throughout the night. "They said around 5.30am on Thursday, Anushree told them that she would not come in the way of their marriage. She advised them to rest in their bedroom but requested them not to lock the door from inside. She also told them that she would sit in the living room for a while before leaving the house," Mohite said.

Nimesh told the police that after some time, Anushree sneaked into the bedroom while they were asleep and poured an inflammable substance on him and Juhi. "He said that before they could react, Anushree set them on fire. She then locked the flat's door and fled. Hearing Nimesh and Juhi screaming, the neighbours broke into the flat and tried to put out the fire."

Fire officer Prabhakar Umratkar told TOI that Juhi was in the balcony when they reached the spot. "The mattress in the room was burnt and the furniture was also damaged," he said.

Senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy, who is related to Juhi, visited the hospital on Friday. Deputy commissioner of police (Zone-IV) Sanjay Jadhav confirmed Rudy's visit.

The hospital MD Parvez Inamdar said Juhi was critical and had been kept in the isolation ICU, while Nimesh is in a stable condition.
