MUMBAI: In a shocking incident, the naked body of a young woman was found lying on the first-floor slab of an under-construction building at Nalasopara (E) on Wednesday night. A medicalexamination confirmed that the victim, who is aged between 25 to 30 years, had been raped.
The victim has been identified as Krishnaa Mahapatra. Officials said the body was trapped between iron rods and the victim must have been pushed off from a height. Her clothes were recovered from the fourth floor, where she could have been raped and then thrown off from. Three persons have been detained for questioning.
Mahapatra stayed at Shirdi Nagar in Nalasopara with her husband. She worked as a diamond setter with a jeweller at Borivli. Her husband, who is a driver, identified her on Friday evening. Sources said she may have been gangraped.
There were no witnesses to the incident on Wednesday night. Residents said there was no power in the area due to load-shedding. Besides, there was a lot of smoke and noise from firecrackers being burst for Diwali. As a result, nobody heard her cries for help. "We reached the spot early on Thursday after locals spotted the body and informed us. Krishnaa is around 5 ft 4 inches tall. She wore a bindi on her forehead and blue nail polish on her fingernails, which led us to believe that she came from a middle-class background," an official said.
The under-construction building where the incident took place is located near Vasant Nagari at Vijaya Laxmi Nagar. The construction at the site is being supervised by one Rambachan Paswan. "We are making inquiries with the site supervisor as well. A case has been registered under Sections 302 and 376 of the IPC," the official said. No arrests have been made yet.
