MALDA: Bimal Murmu, a Class-IX student, tried to set his mother ablaze on Thursday after a soothsayer told him that she was a witch. This happened at the tribal village of Kuriapara in Malda. The woman, Tala Mardi, rushed to the police for help, but they could not get hold of Bimal. She is still in police protection. Police are trying to aware the villagers of this superstition.
After the deaths of Bimalas father Matru Murmu and brother Dudgo, villagers said that Matruas wife was a witch. Bimal fled home in fear and went to stay with his aunt. Finally, on Thursday he tried to kill his mother.
Younger boy Bimal, a student of Class IX of local high school, had gone to his aunt's house in fear of his mother. Tala alleged that Bimal along with his aunt went to a soothsayer to Bamangola. Returning from there, Bimal came to Tala and asked her to go to soothsayer on the evening of Laxmi Puja (12th Oct). But the attitude of his son seemed to be suspicious. She refused to go with her son. Infuriated Bimal then attacked Tala and tried to kill her by setting fire. Tala managed to flee and with the help of one she ran to Malda Police Station. She lodged a complaint against her son.
Police rushed to the village but could not find Bimal.
